Processed Foods and Addiction

  • Do you know anyone addicted to food?
  • Have you ever felt the need to keep eating a particular food?
  • Could food manufacturers be manipulating our neural circuitry?

I have always been a proponent of whole food consumption, home-made cooking, and understanding the ingredients of our food choices.  Our nutritional intake is the key to our continued health.

A recently published article in the Herald Extra title, “Fatty Foods Considered Addictive as Cocaine in Growing Body of Science,” explains some current research demonstrating how processed foods with high quantities of unnatural fats and high fructose corn syrup can actually induce changes within our neural circuitry that can create addictive behaviors.

This is excellent research that will serve the community well in turning back to the basics and coming to understand the importance of their food choices.

In addition, as I am beginning my research experience as a neuroscientist, I am studying the effects of addiction on the brain and will be developing conservative, non-invasive, and alternative therapies for overcoming addiction.
